Players under 13 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian for the duration of the event.

All competitors must:

  • Complete event registration.
  • Pay the applicable tournament entry fee.
  • Complete tournament check-in before the announced deadline.
  • Agree to these tournament rules.
  • Follow all venue rules.
  • Follow all applicable Nintendo tournament requirements.
  • Conduct themselves respectfully toward players, spectators, staff, and venue personnel.

Wolf & Sparrow Studio employees and event staff will be in charge of tournament administration, scoring, bracket management, and handling of cash prizes.

3. REGISTRATION AND ENTRY FEES

The tournament is capped at 32 competitors.

Tournament entry: $20 per competitor.

Tournament entry includes general admission to VGT Day 001.

General spectator/event admission will be:

  • $12 advance admission.
  • $15 door admission.

Spectator admission revenue will be used only toward expenses associated with organizing and operating the event and will not be used to fund tournament prizes. (Max: 300 attendees)

Tournament participant entry fees are applied toward tournament expenses and tournament prizes as permitted by Nintendo's Licensed Tournament Guidelines.

4. MINIMUM PLAYER REQUIREMENT

The competitive tournament requires a minimum of 12 checked-in competitors.

If fewer than 12 competitors are registered by the tournament registration deadline, the organizer may cancel the competitive tournament.

If the tournament is canceled because the minimum player requirement is not reached, affected competitors will be offered either:

  1. A refund of their tournament registration, or
  2. Conversion to general event admission with the appropriate difference refunded.

5. CHECK-IN AND LATE ARRIVALS

All registered competitors must check in before the tournament check-in deadline published for the event.

The proposed tournament start time is 1:00 PM Central Time.

Competitors should be checked in no later than 15 minutes before tournament start.

Players who have not checked in by the deadline may lose their tournament position to another registered player.

Once a player's assigned competitive group has begun, there is no restarting if a player is yet.

A player who misses a race after their group has started will receive zero points for that race unless tournament staff determines that the absence resulted from an event administration error.

6. TOURNAMENT EQUIPMENT

Tournament play will use Nintendo Switch 2 hardware running a legally obtained copy of Mario Kart World.

7. CONTROLLERS

Players may use event-provided controllers or bring their own compatible controller.

Player-owned controllers must be Nintendo-branded or properly licensed for use with Nintendo Switch 2.

Controllers may not contain or use:

  • Turbo functions.
  • Macros.
  • Automated inputs.
  • Hardware modifications that provide a competitive advantage.
  • Unauthorized software or firmware.
  • Any other functionality prohibited under Nintendo's tournament requirements.

Tournament staff may inspect any player-owned controller before or during competition.

A controller determined to violate these rules may not be used.

Players are responsible for ensuring their personal controller is charged and functional before their scheduled match.

Standard in-game control options available normally through Mario Kart Worldโ€”including motion controls are permitted.

8. GAME SETTINGS

All competitive races will use the following baseline settings:

Mode: VS Race
Class: 150cc
Teams: No Teams
Items: Normal
COM Players: No COM
Player Format: Individual
Characters: Unrestricted
Vehicles / Standard Customization: Unrestricted
Game Version: Current event-approved version
Intermission: Approximately 60 seconds between races

Players may use any character, vehicle, and standard gameplay option normally available through the unmodified version of Mario Kart World used for the tournament.

No hacked, modified, unreleased, or otherwise unauthorized game content may be used.

9. COURSE SELECTION

Courses will be selected using Mario Kart World's normal multiplayer course-selection process.

Before each race, participating competitors will select a course from the standard course selection available in the tournament game.

The game will then determine the course using its normal course-selection procedure.

Players may select any course normally available within the tournament room unless tournament staff announces that a particular course has been removed because of a verified technical problem.

A player may not delay tournament progression by intentionally refusing to make a course selection.

10. SCORING

Tournament standings within each group will use the cumulative points awarded by Mario Kart World's normal in-game VS Race scoring system.

Tournament staff will record the final in-game standings after every completed set.

Only cumulative points earned during the applicable tournament set determine placement within that group.

Scores do not carry forward between tournament stages.

For example:

A player's qualifying-round points determine whether that player advances from qualifying.

If the player advances, qualifying points are reset to zero before the semifinal.

Semifinal points are then reset before the Championship Final.

11. TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE

The tournament will consist of:

  1. Qualifying Round
  2. Semifinal Round, when required
  3. Championship Final

The tournament structure depends on the final number of checked-in competitors.

11.1 QUALIFYING ROUND

Players will be randomly assigned to qualifying groups after check-in.

Each qualifying group will contain approximately 4โ€“6 competitors.

Each qualifying group will play:

4 VS Races

using the standard tournament settings.

The top two players by cumulative points in each qualifying group advance.

12โ€“18 Competitors

Players will be divided into 3 qualifying groups as evenly as possible.

Top 2 from each group advance.

6 players advance directly to the Championship Final.

No semifinal is required.

19โ€“24 Competitors

Players will be divided into 4 qualifying groups as evenly as possible.

Top 2 from each group advance.

8 players advance to the Semifinal Round.

25โ€“30 Competitors

Players will be divided into 5 qualifying groups as evenly as possible.

Top 2 from each group advance.

10 players advance to the Semifinal Round.

31โ€“32 Competitors

Players will be divided into 6 qualifying groups as evenly as possible.

Top 2 from each group advance.

12 players advance to the Semifinal Round.

12. SEMIFINAL ROUND

A semifinal is held when the tournament has 19 or more checked-in competitors.

Players advancing from qualifying will be divided as evenly as possible into two semifinal groups.

Tournament staff will perform a randomized semifinal draw while attempting, where mathematically possible, to place competitors from the same qualifying group into different semifinals.

Each semifinal will contain approximately 4โ€“6 players.

Each semifinal will consist of:

4 VS Races

using the standard tournament settings.

The top three players by cumulative points from each semifinal advance.

A total of:

6 players

advance to the Championship Final.

13. CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

The Championship Final will consist of 2 competitors.

The final 2 races will be the top 2 racers from the semi-finals

The competitor with the highest score during finals race is the VGT Day 001 tournament champion.

The competitor with the second-highest score in the finals finishes second.

The competitor with the third-highest score from semi-finals finishes third.

14. TIES

A tiebreaker is required whenever a cumulative-score tie affects:

  • Advancement from qualifying.
  • Advancement from semifinals.
  • First place.
  • Second place.
  • Third place.

Tied players will participate in a single additional VS Race using the standard tournament settings.

Only the tied players participate in the tiebreaker.

Each tied player will make a normal course selection and the game will select the course using its normal course-selection procedure.

Finishing order in the tiebreaker race determines the order of the tied players.

If a tie does not affect advancement or prize placement, the tied players may remain tied for tournament-record purposes.

15. PRIZES

The proposed tournament prize pool is $300 cash. (If we have the maximum amount of players)

Prize distribution:

1st Place โ€” $200
2nd Place โ€” $75
3rd Place โ€” $25

Total cash prizing: $300

Prize money will be funded only from sources permitted under Nintendo's approved tournament license.

Spectator admission fees will not be used toward tournament prizes.

Any applicable tax obligations associated with a prize are the responsibility of the recipient.

A prize won by a minor may require acceptance by the player's parent or legal guardian.

16. DISCONNECTIONS AND TECHNICAL FAILURES

Players must immediately notify tournament staff of technical problems.

Individual connection or controller problem

If an individual player's connection or controller is interrupted during an active race, tournament staff will determine whether the race result remains valid based on the circumstances.

A race will not automatically be restarted solely because of a player-owned controller failure.

Event equipment failure

If tournament-provided hardware, game software, display equipment, or networking experiences a verified failure that materially compromises competitive fairness, tournament staff may:

  • Restart the affected race.
  • Move competitors to replacement equipment.
  • Restore the tournament room.
  • Take another reasonable corrective action necessary to continue the competition fairly.

Room-wide failure

If the tournament room, host system, or network fails in a manner affecting the competitive field generally, the affected race may be declared void and replayed.

Points from a race officially declared void will not count.

Intentional disconnect

A player who intentionally disconnects, powers off equipment, interferes with tournament networking, or otherwise attempts to manipulate a tournament result may be disqualified.

Tournament staff's technical ruling is final for purposes of the event.

17. GAMEPLAY CONDUCT

Normal Mario Kart World gameplay is allowed.

This includes:

  • Normal item use.
  • Defensive item use.
  • Attacking another player using normal game mechanics.
  • Shortcuts available through normal gameplay.
  • Character and vehicle strategies.
  • Normal competitive racing tactics.

Players may not:

  • Collude to manipulate standings.
  • Intentionally lose for the benefit of another competitor.
  • Agree to split or manipulate tournament results.
  • Intentionally stall tournament progression.
  • Exploit unauthorized software or hardware.
  • Use cheats or modifications.
  • Physically interfere with another player.
  • Touch another player's controller or console during competition.
  • Intentionally obstruct another player's view of their display.
  • Receive outside gameplay assistance during an active race.
  • Engage in behavior intended primarily to prevent the tournament from operating normally.

Players may discuss strategy between tournament sets but may not receive active coaching during a race.

18. SCORE REPORTING AND DISPUTES

Tournament staff will record the final in-game scoreboard after each competitive set.

Players should review the results before leaving the tournament station.

Any score dispute must be brought to tournament staff immediately.

Once the next tournament stage involving the affected player has begun, previously verified scores will normally be considered final unless tournament staff discovers a clear administrative or technical error.

Tournament staff may use:

  • The in-game scoreboard.
  • Staff observations.
  • Photographs of result screens.
  • Video recordings, if available.
  • Hardware/network information.
  • Statements from the affected players.

when resolving a dispute.

The Tournament Director's ruling is final for purposes of VGT Day 001.

19. PLAYER NAMES

Player names, aliases, and tags must be appropriate for a general audience.

Names containing obscene, hateful, discriminatory, threatening, sexually explicit, or otherwise inappropriate material are prohibited.

Tournament staff may require a competitor to change their displayed name.

Refusal may result in disqualification.

20. CODE OF CONDUCT

VGT Day 001 is intended to be welcoming to both experienced and casual players.

Harassment, discrimination, threats, intimidation, fighting, or deliberate disruption are prohibited.

Players and spectators must treat:

  • Other competitors.
  • Spectators.
  • Wolf & Sparrow Studio employees.
  • Tournament staff.
  • Venue employees.
  • Equipment owners.

with reasonable respect.

Competitive banter is permitted provided it does not become harassment, threatening behavior, excessive disruption, or personal abuse.

Tournament staff may issue:

  1. A verbal warning.
  2. A tournament penalty.
  3. Match or race forfeiture.
  4. Disqualification.
  5. Removal from the venue.

depending on the seriousness of the conduct.

Severe behavior may result in immediate removal without a prior warning.

21. ALCOHOL, DRUGS, AND GAMBLING

Alcohol and illegal drugs are prohibited at the Licensed Tournament.

Players or spectators who are visibly intoxicated or impaired may be removed.

Gambling is prohibited.

This includes organized betting or wagering on tournament matches or tournament results.

22. FOOD AND DRINK

The organizer may provide complimentary packaged snacks, food, water, and nonalcoholic beverages for attendees.

Food and beverages must be kept away from tournament consoles and other gaming equipment when directed by tournament staff.

Any caterer used by the organizer will operate solely as an event service provider unless Nintendo separately approves another relationship.

No alcoholic beverages will be served.

23. CASUAL FREE PLAY

VGT Day 001 may include separate casual gaming stations.

Casual stations:

  • Are separate from competitive tournament stations.
  • Do not affect tournament standings.
  • May be used by ticketed attendees at no additional charge.
  • Will use legally obtained, unmodified game software and compatible hardware.
  • Remain subject to event conduct and equipment rules.

Tournament play receives priority over casual play if tournament equipment is required to keep competition running on schedule.

24. RULE CHANGES AND UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES

These rules are intended to govern all normal tournament situations.

If an unforeseen technical, safety, legal, or operational circumstance occurs, tournament staff may make a reasonable ruling necessary to preserve competitive fairness and safely continue the event.

Any material rule change made before tournament play begins will be communicated to registered competitors.

The organizer will not intentionally modify advancement requirements, scoring, or prize distribution after competition begins except when necessary to address an extraordinary circumstance or to comply with Nintendo's instructions.

If Nintendo's approved License Term Sheet conflicts with any provision of these rules, Nintendo's approved License Term Sheet and applicable Licensed Tournament Guidelines control.

25. DISQUALIFICATION

A player may be disqualified for:

  • Cheating.
  • Use of unauthorized or modified hardware/software.
  • Intentional disconnection.
  • Match manipulation.
  • Collusion.
  • Gambling.
  • Harassment or discrimination.
  • Physical aggression.
  • Intentional equipment damage.
  • Repeated refusal to follow tournament staff instructions.
  • Serious disruption of tournament operations.
  • Violation of Nintendo's applicable tournament requirements.
  • Violation of applicable law or venue rules.

Disqualified players may forfeit eligibility for prizes.

Disqualification due to misconduct does not entitle the player to a refund.

26. REQUIRED NINTENDO NOTICE

Nintendo is not a sponsor of or affiliated with this tournament.

Participants and spectators will also be provided access to Nintendo's applicable "Terms for participating in and viewing Licensed Tournaments using Nintendo Games."
